In May of 2022, a coalition of over 400+ businesses, nonprofits, educators and experts came together for the nation’s first-ever National Fentanyl Awareness Day (the Day) to raise public awareness about the death and suffering caused by illicitly manufactured fentanyl in street drugs. As Americans become more aware of – and impacted by – illicitly manufactured fentanyl, their questions will require more detailed and nuanced answers. The Day has established the Expert Fentanyl Response Team, made up of an array of medical, law enforcement, youth education and harm reduction experts. The team’s goal is to elevate the national conversation about the fentanyl crisis in a way that considers all perspectives and can catalyze real solutions. The Fentanyl Encounters overview is the group’s first public contribution to the national dialogue.
